Restoring Dignity Through Creativity,

Upcyclers Creative

Hub

Who We Are

Upcyclers Creative Hub is a dynamic, youth- and women-led social enterprise under the umbrella of Mto Wangu Initiative, a registered community-based organization in Mathare, Nairobi. Our mission is rooted in social justice, environmental sustainability, and gender empowerment. We address two interconnected challenges faced by underserved communities—textile waste and period poverty—through innovation, creativity, and empowerment.

Founded by local artisans, young creatives, and survivors of systemic inequalities, our Hub serves as a safe, inclusive space where passion meets purpose. We empower young women—particularly single mothers, youths from informal settlements, and survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV)—by equipping them with hands-on skills in tailoring, textile upcycling, and eco-entrepreneurship.

Vision

Vision: To create a circular, just, and sustainable fashion economy in informal settlements that restores dignity, builds resilience, and fosters economic empowerment.

Mission

To equip marginalized young women and girls with practical skills to transform textile waste into usable products like reusable sanitary towels, upcycled clothing, school uniforms, and eco-bags while promoting climate action and menstrual health rights.

What We Do

Tailoring & Upcycling Training

We offer intensive, hands-on training programs in fashion design, sewing, and creative upcycling. Each cohort is mentored by experienced artisans and supported with tools, materials, and guidance to launch micro-enterprises or join our growing production unit.

Reusable Sanitary Towels Production

Our flagship project combats period poverty by producing safe, affordable, and eco-friendly reusable sanitary pads. These pads reduce school absenteeism among girls, uplift dignity, and contribute to zero-waste menstrual solutions.

Advocacy & Community Engagement

Using art as a tool for social change, we organize workshops, performances, exhibitions, and street modeling to advocate for:

  • Menstrual equity
  • Climate justice
  • Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR)
  • Ending female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage

Product Sales & Eco-Innovation

We create and sell a vibrant range of upcycled, handcrafted items—from clothing and tote bags to home décor. Every purchase supports our artisans and helps build a climate-conscious consumer culture.
